Dr Varun Malik

Dr Varun Malik is a cardiologist and electrophysiologist with a clinical focus on the diagnosis and management of heart rhythm disorders. He performs catheter ablation of ventricular arrhythmias, atrial fibrillation and atrial flutter, and implants cardiac devices. He has a particular interest in the cardiac dysautonomias, including postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) and vasovagal syncope.

Varun completed his medical and research training at the University of Western Australia, and undertook cardiology training at Royal Perth Hospital, Flinders Medical Centre and the Canberra Hospital. He went on to complete electrophysiology fellowships at the Royal Adelaide Hospital and at UCLA in the United States.

He holds a PhD from the University of Adelaide, awarded with the Dean's Commendation for Doctoral Thesis Excellence, and is a Senior Clinical Lecturer in the University's School of Medicine — where he founded the Cardiac Arrhythmia and Autonomic Neurosciences research laboratory. His research examines the role of the autonomic nervous system in triggering and sustaining cardiac arrhythmias.

Varun's work has been recognised with the Heart Rhythm Society's Young Investigator Award in Clinical Research (2021) and the JACC: Clinical Electrophysiology Best Author Award (2022).
